Description

What is Impingement?

Impingement is a fancy, medical word for pinching.

There are 3 Different Types of Impingement Described at the Hip:

  1. Cam: The ball of the hip (the hip is a ball and socket joint) is not perfectly round, leading to pinching forces.
  2. Pincer: The socket of the hip is too deep or has over-coverage of the ball, leading to pinching forces.
  3. Combined: A combination of the Cam and Pincer bone shapes.

Do I Need to See a Physician?

Generally, when in doubt, consult with your physician. For Hip Impingement Dysfunction, indicators that you should see your physician are:

  • You have a significant loss of hip movement. If the structure of your hip is physically blocking your ability to move, surgical intervention may be your best path.
  • Your anterior hip pain is severe. If the structure of your hip is physically blocking your ability to move and resulting in excessive bone and bone impact, surgical intervention may be your best path.

Jenny’s Hallmark Signs of Hip Impingement Dysfunction:

  • Moderately sharp anterior hip pain with hip flexion (bringing your thigh toward your chest)
  • Mild limitation in hip flexion range of motion.
  • Discomfort with squatting motions, especially deeper squatting motions.
