Description
Snapping Hip Terminology.
Snapping Hip is referred to as Coxa Saltans among medical providers.
In Latin,
Coxa= Hip
Saltans= “Jump” or “Jumping”
What is that Noise/ Sensation?
Clicking/ Snapping Noises at the Hip have 3 Main Sources:
- Internal. Typically comes from your hip flexor tendon rubbing over the ridge of the pelvis.
- Intra-Articular. Intra-articular means from “inside the hip joint”. Snapping or clicking noises coming from this part of the hip suggest possible problems with your labrum (cartilage structure in the hip joint), loose bodies (bone-like fragment), or possible fracture.
- External. Typically comes from the IT band (iliotibial band) rubbing over the outer hip bone (greater trochanter).
Which of these is “Snapping Hip”?
When we are discussing Snapping Hip in the physical therapy clinic, we are typically referring to Source #1 or #3.
Do I Need to See a Physician?
Generally, when in doubt, consult with your physician. For Snapping Hip, indicators that you should see your physician are:
- You have a significant loss of hip movement (this suggests a problem inside the hip joint that is not related to Snapping Hip).
- Onset of your clicking/ noises occurred with a fall (this suggests possible need to rule out a fracture).
- Your hip feels unstable, which makes it feel like your leg will buckle or collapse (this suggests a problem inside the hip joint that is not related to Snapping Hip).

Myofascial Rolling Pin such as a Tiger Tail
Foam Roller such as ProSource Flex Foam Roller (White, 36″). NOTE: The different colors are typically different foam densities. Choosing a “White” foam roller is not an aesthetic choice, it is the density that I’m looking for.
