Description

What is the Pelvic Floor?

The pelvic floor is a supportive sling of muscles that are essential for supporting the organs in the pelvis and ensuring good urinary, bowel, and sexual function in the absence of pain.

Do I Need to See a Physician?

Generally, when in doubt, consult with your physician. For Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, indicators that you should see your physician are:

  • If you have had a recent low back injury that triggers:
    • Bowel Changes (Forgive the Language: You are “pooping in your pants”/ having accidents or you are pooping significantly less than is your usual).
    • Bladder Changes (Forgive the Language: You are “peeing in your pants”/ having accidents or you are peeing significantly less than is your usual).
    • You have Saddle Numbness (You cannot feel your “undercarriage area” or it feels like there is less sensation there than usual).
    • Your sexual function has changed (You cannot achieve an erection or orgasm).

THESE ARE SIGNS OF POSSIBLE CENTRAL COMPRESSION IN YOUR SPINE AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY!

  • If you have:
    • Bowel Changes (Forgive the Language: Leakage of poop or difficulty pooping).
    • Bladder Changes (Forgive the Language: Leakage or difficulty peeing).
    • Your sexual function has changed (You cannot achieve an erection or orgasm or are having pain with sexual activities).
