What is Arthritis/ Osteoarthritis?
“Arthr-“= Joint
“-itis”= Inflammation
“Arthritis”= Inflammation of a Joint. Typically, I prefer to describe arthritis as the result of prolonged stress to a joint over time.
“Osteoarthritis”= Arthritis related to wear and tear. When most people talk about “their arthritis”, they are typically talking about their Osteoarthritis (or OA).
The development of arthritis is a NORMAL part of our aging process. If we all are blessed to live long enough, we will ALL develop arthritis eventually.
Do I Need to See a Physician?
Generally, when in doubt, consult with your physician. For Knee Arthritis, indicators that you should see your physician are:
- You have a significant loss of knee movement. Full knee straight is critical for good walking mechanics. A reasonable amount of knee bend is needed to fit your leg into a car or sit in a chair comfortably.
- The loss of knee function is starting to impact other body parts. Meaning, the limping due to your knee pain has now begun to affect your hip or back on that side.
- Your knee pain prevents you from sleeping.
- Your knee feels unstable, which makes it feel like your leg will buckle or collapse.
Jenny’s Hallmark Signs of Knee Arthritis:
- Knee stiffness that is greatest first thing in the morning or with prolonged inactivity.
- Difficulty or inability to achieve full knee extension and straightening.
- Increased pain toward the end of day (presumably from tiring out the knee during the course of the day).
