Description
What is Arthritis/ Osteoarthritis?
“Arthr-“= Joint
“-itis”= Inflammation
“Arthritis”= Inflammation of a Joint. Typically, I prefer to describe arthritis as the result of prolonged stress to a joint over time.
“Osteoarthritis”= Arthritis related to wear and tear. When most people talk about “their arthritis”, they are typically talking about their Osteoarthritis (or OA).
The development of arthritis is a NORMAL part of our aging process. If we all are blessed to live long enough, we will ALL develop arthritis eventually.
Do I Need to See a Physician?
Generally, when in doubt, consult with your physician. For Hand Arthritis, indicators that you should see your physician are:
- Onset of hand pain is due to a fall (this suggests that this is likely not Hand Arthritis)
- Onset of hand/ thumb pain is due to a hyperextension injury (this suggests that this is likely not Hand Arthritis)
- Your pain/ dysfunction has been going on for a long time or significantly limits your functional ability.
